5.NBT.7: Performing Mathematical Operations on Decimals: A Strategy-Based Approach

Grade: 5th Grade

Domain: NBT: Number and Operations in Base Ten

Standard Description

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Domain Description

Understand that in a multi-digit number, a digit's value is 10 times greater than the one to its right and 1/10 of the one to its left. Explain how multiplying a number by powers of ten affects the number of zeros and the decimal point's placement. Utilize whole-number exponents for powers of 10. Read and write decimals to thousandths in base-ten numerals, verbal expression, and expanded form like 347.392 = 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 7 × 1 + 3 × (1/10) + 9 × (1/100) + 2 × (1/1000).

Compare two decimals up to thousandths by evaluating the significance of each digit, recording the comparison using >, =, and < symbols. Skillfully round decimals to any place using understanding of place value. Practice multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers using the standard method. Derive whole-number quotients of whole numbers with dividends up to four digits and divisors up to two digits through strategies based on place value, operational properties, and the relationship between multiplication and division. Use diagrams, equations, or models to illustrate and explain the calculations.
