5.OA.3: Understanding and Graphing Numerical Patterns
Grade: 5th Grade
Domain: OA: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Standard Description
Domain Description
Using brackets, parentheses or braces in numerical expressions is used to analyze these expressions with their symbols. Expressions can be written to capture computations with numbers and read without calculating. For example, "add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2" could be written as 2 × (8 + 7). Without calculation, one should note that 3 × (18932 + 921) is triple the size of 18932 + 921.
One can create two number patterns using predefined rules. Identifying correlations between corresponding values, constructing ordered pairs from both patterns and plotting these pairs on a graph is part of the process. For instance, start from zero and add 3 to generate one sequence, and for the other, start from zero and add 6. Observe that the values in the second sequence are double those in the first without formal proof.
